The political situation in Nigeria has shown that it is not yet uhuru. That politicians promise bridges even where there are no rivers is a universal truism, but the Nigerian case is so pathetic. Nigerian politicians promise heaven and earth and only end up in doing nothing for the electorate, except enriching their pockets. The problem with Nigeria has always been that of leadership (leadership at all levels).
The failure of leadership in Nigeria is a function of the scarcity of devoted people men of integrity. Men with service-oriented leadership are not easy to come by in this part of the world. The bane of our contemporary Nigerian society is service that is characterized by pervasive egocentricity and paucity of altruism. Indeed a cursory look at our prevailing socio-economic quagmire leads to the temptation to conclude that “the beautiful ones are not yet born”.
We are now experiencing in this country, leaders with warped minds. The country has run aground because those who take office get their minds distorted by power. This may produce the genial psychopath who exhibits every sign of normalcy but is essentially dedicated to the destruction of his society. It is difficult to cure psychopaths, because in therapy, the psychopath may tell you things he does not mean. This may lead to a systemic breakdown. Hence, the call for men of integrity and godly character.
Evil will only triumph when good men decide to do nothing. Jethro counseled
Moses, “select capable men from all the people-men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain - and appoint them as officials” (Exodus 18:21). This is a clarion call for men of integrity, to come up and exert the necessary changes in the polity. Youths! The future is in your hands. For when the righteous is in power, the people will surely rejoice.
